When you think of diesel-fueled vehicles, you probably only think of 18-wheelers and construction equipment. Or maybe you just think of the fact that as you’re paying more than $4 a gallon for gasoline, the prices for diesel fuel are even higher these days.
“In the U.S. last year, diesel cars made up about 3 percent of all new vehicle sales, which is really a drop in the bucketand most of that was the diesel engine options in some of the beefier pickup trucks,” said Allen Schaeffer, executive director of the Diesel Technology Forum, the nation’s leading advocate for diesel technology. “Just to contrast, last year in the European Union, diesel made up 53 percent of all new vehicle sales.”

OK, car buffs. How would you like to drive a 2009 Audi A4 that has 236 horsepower, shove-you-back-in-your-seat acceleration of 369 lb-ft of torque and still get 36 miles per gallon? You would?

Diesel power is at the forefront of any emergency response, including the response to Hurricane Gustav. Diesel is the technology of choice for emergency generators because of its self-contained fuel supply, reliability/durability and ability to handle heavy electrical loads.
Before
• As Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf of Mexico, diesel-powered school and charter buses helped to evacuate residents.
• Louisiana National Guard engineering units relied on utility trucks and personnel carriers that are predominately diesel powered.
•The Federal Emergency Management Agency staged emergency supply food and equipment distribution using diesel tractor trailers.
• Farmers, using diesel-powered tractors and combines, worked overtime to harvest crops before Gustav hit.
During
• Emergency back-up electrical generators powered by diesel sustained power to emergency operation centers for state and local governments and for hospitals during the storm.
• As the storm hit in St. Charles Parish, diesel generators powered pumps at the water treatment plant to guarantee safe drinking water supplies.
After
• As the region moves into the recovery and rebuilding phases, heavy diesel powered construction equipment (backhoes, excavators, loaders, dump trucks) will be essential to disaster recovery operations.
• Electric utility companies will work around the clock to restore power by resetting power lines using bucket-lift trucks powered mostly by diesel engines.

Diesel vehicles account for about 50 percent of European markets, but only 2 percent in the U.S. But that is about to change according to Mike Omotoso, senior manager at J.D. Power & Associates, who estimates that the figure will rise to 10 percent by 2015, AdAge reports.

An airliner gulps gallons of jet fuel each minute as it taxis thousands of miles around airports every year. In a bid to help airlines at O’Hare International Airport conserve fuel and cut expenses, one company has proposed a “tug” towing service for planes, which would burn less than a half-gallon of diesel fuel per minute, compared with almost six gallons of the more expensive jet fuel that a Boeing 757 would burn.
